The monthly food distribution occurs the Friday and
Saturday after bagging week begins. These are the days when the
host organizations that sponsor SHARE
come to the warehouse to pick up
their food in bulk. During this time we will distribute large
amounts of bulk food and there are many areas where volunteers are
needed. Here are a few of the jobs that volunteers help out with
on our distribution days:
Split Line workers: These volunteers hand out individual units of
food to our SHARE Host Si tes and participants. This job is very
fun and often requires minimal or no lifting.
Checkers: These people check to ensure that each group receives the
food that they've ordered. Our checkers accompany groups as they
pick up their items at the splits tables and master case sections.
L oaders: These persons help load vehicles at the loading docks.
Once the vehicles are loaded, the loaders return the empty carts to
their appropriate locations.
Packers: Often we will try to pre-pack several individual
SHARE packages to make an express line for individuals or sites with
only a few orders. These people will ensure that packages are
packed correctly and ready to distribute to the participants.
Distribution days are very busy and together we accomplish a lot in a very
small amount of time. There is lots of teamwork and spirit
that makes this a success each and every month.
